What this medicine is for



This medicine contains a sedative antihistamine and a sedating cough suppressant to relieve the symptoms of a child’s dry, tickly and unproductive cough.





Before you give this medicine




Do not give:



  • If your child is allergic to any of the ingredients

  • If your child has severe liver or kidney problems

  • If your child is taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors (for depression) or has taken them in the last 14 days

  • If your child is under 2 years

  • If your child has an intolerance to some sugars, unless your doctor tells you to (this medicine contains maltitol liquid, which may have a mild laxative effect)

  • If your child is taking any other cough and cold medicine




Talk to your pharmacist or doctor:



  • If your child has long term lung problems e.g. bronchitis or bronchiectasis

  • If your child is under 6 years

  • If your child takes other medicines

    • medicines which cause a dry mouth (e.g. tricyclic antidepressants)

    • sedative medicines



  • If your child suffers from epilepsy or other liver problems (this medicine contains alcohol which may be harmful to your child)

Information for people with diabetes: Each 5 ml spoonful contains 1.9 g maltitol liquid, this provides 4 Kcal.





Information for adults intending to take this medicine



All of the above information on this carton will apply to you as well. This medicine may be harmful to you if you suffer from alcoholism. This medicine may increase the effects of alcohol. Each 5 ml spoonful contains 0.19 g alcohol equivalent to 4.8 ml of beer or 2 ml of wine.



Warning: May cause drowsiness. If affected do not drive or operate machinery.



Avoid alcoholic drink.





Pregnancy and breastfeeding:



Do not take, unless your doctor tells you to.






How to give this medicine



Check the seal is not broken before first use. If it is, do not give the medicine.



Use the measuring spoon provided (the small end measures 2.5 ml and the big end measures 5 ml).




Children of 2 to 5 years


Give 5ml three times during the day and once at bedtime.
Don’t give more than 20ml in 24 hours.




Children of 6 to 12 years


Give 10ml three times during the day and once at bedtime.
Don’t give more than 40ml in 24 hours.




Give this medicine to your child to swallow.



Do not give to children under 2 years.



Do not give more than the amount recommended above.



If symptoms do not go away talk to your doctor.



If you give too much: Talk to doctor or hospital casualty department straight away.





Possible side effects




Most people will not have problems but some may get some of these:



If you get any of these serious side effects, stop giving the syrup. See a doctor at once:



  • Difficulty in breathing, swelling of the face, neck, tongue or throat (severe allergic reactions)

These other effects are less serious. If they bother you talk to a pharmacist:



  • Constipation, feeling or being sick

  • Drowsiness, dry mouth, skin rashes

  • Phlegm on the chest

  • Mood changes



If any side effect becomes severe, or you notice any side effect not listed here, please tell your pharmacist or doctor.





How to store this medicine



Do not store above 25°C. Do not refrigerate or freeze.



Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.



Use by the date on the end flap of the carton.





Active ingredients



Each 5 ml of oral solution contains Diphenhydramine Hydrochloride 12.5 mg, Pholcodine 1.5 mg.



Also contains: purified water, glycerol (E422), maltitol liquid (E965), ethanol (4.8 vol %), sodium citrate, hyetellose, citric acid, acesulfame potassium, sorbic acid (E200), sodium chloride, flavours (apple and redcurrant, containing propylene glycol).
